NARFE Legislative Hotline – February 12, 2014

NARFE Legislative Hotline – February 12, 2014

Message from NARFE President Joseph A. Beaudoin

“Winter returns tonight. The predicted storm means that NARFE Headquarters will be closed on Thursday and Friday for the safety of NARFE employees, and to allow road crews to clear snow and ice from area roadways. The House is in recess until February 25, and the Senate is in recess February 17 through 21. If your weather allows, I urge you to look for public events on the websites of your congressman and senators, attend and participate. If you have not scheduled a meeting in advance of the recess, you can drop by your legislator’s office with the most recent copy of narfe magazine and ask for the district director’s business card.”

The Hotline will return on February 28.

Debt-Ceiling Update; Military Retirement COLAs

On February 11, the House passed legislation to suspend the debt ceiling until March 2015. Today, the Senate passed the samelegislation, clearing the measure for a presidential signature. Additionally, the House passed a bill to repeal the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to military retiree pensions awarded prior to age 62 that was part of the December budget agreement. The Senate, just prior to adjournment, passed the legislation sending it to the President.

Federal Employee Counts

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has updated federal employment counts by state and size of agency. The Fedscopeservice of OPM now allows users to drill into September 2013 employment counts by state. Federally Employed Women and OPM provide employment and retiree counts by state and county. NARFE has requested OPM provide counts by congressional district.

NARFE Office to be Closed

The National Weather Service is predicting a major winter storm for the mid-Atlantic region on Wednesday night and Thursday, February 12 and 13, and has declared a winter storm warning for the Alexandria, VA, area from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 3 p.m. Thursday. The Virginia governor has declared a state of emergency, which provides additional flexibility for state and local agencies to respond to the storm. Since Monday, February 17, is a federal holiday, NARFE Headquarters will reopen on Tuesday, February 18.
