Future Engineers Experience First Robotics

First Robotics

The 2012 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship in St. Louis pitted top high school teams from across the globe against each other. The goal: to design and produce robots capable of shooting basketballs through hoops.

Known as the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Championship, top teams of science and technology whizzes from around the world design and build robots to perform specialized tasks against their competitors. The FIRST theme in 2012 was “Rebound Rumble,” where the student-controlled robots tried to shoot as many basketballs as possible through the hoops during a two minute, fifteen second match.

Boeing, a FIRST sponsor, supported 48 team finalists at this year’s championship. Numerous Boeing engineers also volunteered their time as team mentors. The overall goal of the FIRST organization is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and technology.

For companies like Boeing, the FIRST mission ensures a new generation of leaders is empowered and savvy enough to meet emerging global challenges.
