General Atomics wins $38.4 million UAV contract

The Air Force has awarded Poway-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems a $38.4 million contract for unmanned aerial vehicles, the Defense Department said Friday.

The contract is for two MQ-9 Reapers and two aircraft containers to be used for transport, Air Force officials said. Work is scheduled to be completed by November 2013.

The MQ-9 Reaper is an armed, medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft. Reapers can perform surveillance, reconnaissance, close air support, combat search and rescue, precision strikes, convoy and raid overwatch, route clearance, target development and terminal air guidance.
